About Namibia
Namibia is a country in the south west of Africa. You can visit at any time of year. People come for the desert, the wild animals, and the great road trips you can drive yourself. The country is safe and calm, most of it has no malaria, and it is easy to get around. It is one of the best and easiest places in Africa for a holiday. Here are the main things to know before you plan a Namibia trip.
Most people stay for 7 to 14 days. A normal trip puts together the sand dunes at Sossusvlei, the animals in Etosha National Park, and the coast at Swakopmund. You can drive yourself or go with a private guide.

Five reasons to visit Namibia

The dunes of Sossusvlei
These are some of the tallest sand dunes in the world. They rise up to 325 metres above the Sossusvlei pan and turn deep red at sunrise. Close by is Deadvlei, a flat white pan with old dead trees on it. It is the most photographed spot in the Namib.

Big game at the waterholes
Etosha is one of the best parks in Africa. It is built around a huge white salt pan. In the dry season, elephant, lion, rhino, giraffe and springbok all come to drink at the water holes. They are easy to see, and you can drive yourself.

Where the desert meets the Atlantic
At Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, the sand dunes meet the cold sea. You can drive the big dunes at Sandwich Harbour, go kayaking near seals and dolphins, or watch pink flamingos on the water in the evening.

Desert-adapted wildlife
Damaraland has big open skies, old valleys, and rare elephant and black rhino that live in the desert. It is also home to the old rock carvings at Twyfelfontein, which are on the UNESCO list. This is Namibia at its most wild.

Vast canyon country
The far south has one of the biggest canyons in the world, strange quiver-tree forests, and the old ghost town of Kolmanskop. The desert sand is slowly filling its empty rooms.
Top things to do in Namibia
From dune-top sunrises to floodlit waterholes, these are the things that make a Namibia trip special.

Climb the dunes at Sossusvlei

Paddle on the Walvis Bay water close to seals, dolphins and pink flamingos.
4x4 dune trips
Ride over the big dunes at Sandwich Harbour and find the small desert animals known as the "little five".

Sesriem, the highest sand dunes in the world, and the strange flat pans of the Namib-Naukluft.
Swakopmund and Walvis Bay
A coast town with a German feel, and a bay full of things to do, with seals and flamingos.
Damaraland
Big open skies, old rock art, and elephant and rhino that live in the desert.
Skeleton Coast
Far away, wild and very beautiful. This is Namibia at its most wild.
Fish River Canyon and the South
Big canyon country, the ghost town of Kolmanskop, and the quiver-tree forests of the south.
Kaokoland / Kunene
A far-off area where the Himba people live and keep their way of life.
Zambezi Region (Caprivi)
A green, river area, very different from the desert. Good for river animals and bird watching.
Best time to visit Namibia
You can visit Namibia at any time of year. The easiest time is the long dry season from May to October. The weather is clear and the animals come to the water holes, so they are easy to see. The green months are quieter, the views are lovely, and prices are lower.
These months are a guide only. Please check the weather when you book.
